Skie’s client story began when she came to Self Advocacy Sydney as a Leadership and Peer Support client. At the time, she was completing a Diploma in Community Services. As a client, she was welcomed to the group and was well liked by all clients and staff.
During lockdown Skie not only showed great support during our sessions but she also supported other clients. She connected with them on a regular basis by Zoom and phone.
Skie became a very welcome member of staff after completing her studies (Diploma) in December 2021. After becoming a staff member, she has progressed to LAPS Team Leader! She is also part of a research team, working on projects with Board Member Professor Iva Strnadova and Julie Loblinzk with UNSW. They look at research projects focused on how to better support people with intellectual disability.
Recently, she was invited to talk at the NSW Parliament about their latest project GeneEQUAL, which is about genetic testing for people with intellectual disability. We are so proud of Skie’s client story and how far she has come!
